After his wife's face was scarred by a fire, her husband refused to abandon her.

Turia Pitt had it all: energy, success, a booming career, love… and that radiant beauty that seemed to light up everything she touched. At just 24, this young Australian woman divided her time between modeling, an engineering job in a diamond mine, and simple happiness with Michael, her partner whom she met in high school.

But on September 2, 2011, his life changed forever.

The day everything changed

Turia was participating in a 100-kilometer ultra-distance race organized by RacingThePlanet in Australia. What was supposed to be a sporting adventure turned into a nightmare when grass and bushes caught fire, trapping several participants.

The fire was so sudden and intense that the athletes only managed to complete a small portion of the course before being surrounded by flames. Lacking sufficient safety measures, escaping the blaze was impossible.

To survive, Turia had to cross the wall of fire.

She narrowly escaped with her life, suffering severe third-degree burns over 65% of her body. Five fingers had to be amputated. Her face, hands, and entire body were deeply affected.

She spent 864 days in the hospital and underwent more than 200 operations.
