How to grow lavender in a pot: the secret to naturally scenting your whole home

  1. As soon as the young plants have 3 to 4 pairs of leaves, repot them in pots (8 to 10 cm) with a more mineral mixture: half universal potting soil, half sand or perlite.
  2. Gradually accustom them to direct sunlight (a few more minutes each day), then give them at least 6 hours of direct light.
  3. Water sparingly: allow the soil to dry out to a depth of about 2 cm between waterings.

The express method: propagating lavender from cuttings

Faster than sowing seeds, cuttings faithfully reproduce your favorite variety.

  1. Take a semi-woody shoot of 8 to 12 cm in late summer or spring.
  2. Strip the base, optionally dust with rooting hormone.
  3. Plant in a 7-9 cm pot filled with a mixture of sand and potting soil (50/50).
  4. Cover with a clear bag to retain moisture and place in soft light.
  5. Patience: in 3 to 6 weeks, a slight resistance to pulling indicates the formation of roots.

Clever care for happy indoor lavender

  • Light  : south or west facing window, light curtains if the sun is too strong.
  • Watering  : a little but well; always empty the saucer after 10 minutes.
  • Substrate  : think "dry and aerated". An excess of sand or perlite prevents compaction.
  • Pruning  : after flowering, shorten by a third without cutting into the old wood; this densifies the clump and promotes a good second flush.
  • Fertilizer  : light, in spring only (Mediterranean plant type, dose divided by two).
