How to grow lavender in a pot: the secret to naturally scenting your whole home

Mistakes to avoid (and how to correct them)

  • Too much water  : grey-green leaves that are softening? Space out waterings and repot in a more mineral mix.
  • Not enough light  : stems growing longer, little fragrance? Move the plant closer to a sunnier window.
  • Sowing too deep  : lavender likes a very thin covering; reseed on the surface if necessary.
  • A pot without a drainage hole  is a deal-breaker. Drill a hole or change the container.

Mini calendar “French style”

  • Feb.–Apr.:  sowing indoors; cuttings possible under a bright shelter.
  • May  : acclimatization to full sun, repotting.
  • June–Sept.:  flowering, light pruning, harvesting of stems.
  • Oct  .: maintenance pruning, wintering in a bright location protected from frost.
