President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the United States should not accept immigrants from "shithole countries" like Haiti, El Salvador, or African nations, but rather from countries like Norway, according to local media reports.

"Why are we having all these people from those shithole countries coming here?" Trump said at the meeting, according to information initially published by The Washington Post and later by The New York Times and other media outlets, citing anonymous sources.

The report notes that Trump also said his country should instead receive immigrants from "countries like Norway."

The president was meeting at the White House with Democratic and Republican senators to discuss a proposed immigration reform that would benefit nationals of those countries.

On Twitter, Trump denied having said "anything derogatory about Haitians other than that it is obviously a very poor and troubled country."

"It's a fabrication by the Democrats. I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians. I should probably record future meetings, unfortunately, I don't trust them!" she added.

"The language I used was harsh, but this wasn't the language used. What was truly harsh was the outlandish proposal," he noted in another tweet.

"Permanent solutions"
In a statement, White House spokesman Raj Shah did not deny the words attributed to Trump.

"While some politicians in Washington choose to fight for other countries, the president will always fight for the American people," the note reads.

"Just as other countries have immigration systems based on a meritocratic system, President Trump wants to fight for permanent solutions that make our country stronger by welcoming those who can contribute to our society," the statement reads.
