What my daughter almost touched could have cost her her life

Good habits to adopt to protect yourself while walking

Since that incident, I've changed my approach to outdoor excursions. Not with fear, but with heightened awareness. Here are a few simple habits that can truly make a difference:

  • Observe before touching  : whether it is a branch, a trunk or a stone, it is better to take a moment to look carefully before placing your hand on it.
  • Teaching children to ask  : a little "can I touch?" before exploring can prevent a lot of trouble.
  • Pack light  : a pair of thin gloves, a magnifying glass and a small first aid kit take up little space but are very reassuring.
  • Prevention is better than cure  : if you spot an unusual grouping of insects or a strange pattern on a tree, report it  to the relevant authorities or the town hall .

To speak is to protect

Children learn quickly, especially when the explanation is visual and adapted to their age. For example, you can tell them that some insects wear  "tree costumes"  to hide, and that, like a hedgehog, they shouldn't be touched.

As parents and grandparents, we have a responsibility to pass on this knowledge. It only takes a few minutes but can prevent an accident.

Nature, beautiful and respected

This episode did not take away my pleasure in walking; on the contrary, it taught me to look more attentively, to admire the details, and to teach children that the beauty of nature goes hand in hand with respect and caution.

And if one day, while walking along a path, you notice a strange pattern or an unusual grouping on a tree, remember: it is better to refrain from touching and ask for advice.
