Imagine: a radiant sky, a well-stocked picnic basket, the sound of children's laughter echoing around us… That was exactly how our Sunday had been. We had found a small, shady spot, a little off the path, ideal for enjoying the peace and quiet. Everything seemed perfect. Until our daughter spotted a tree that was "different from the others"... and reached out to it.
Childlike curiosity that almost cost dearly

“Mom, Dad, come see! The tree has stripes, it’s so beautiful!”
Her voice was full of wonder. My husband, sitting next to me, looked up and had a bad feeling. In a flash, he stood up and went to our daughter. Just inches away, his hand would have landed on something we never imagined we’d encounter…
What we thought was a simple natural pattern was in fact a group of extremely discreet and irritating insects.
The Invisible Enemy: When Nature Blends into the Scenery
These tiny creatures possessed an effective weapon: camouflage. Perfectly aligned against the bark, they were virtually indistinguishable from moss or natural cracks in the wood. In reality, they were caterpillars with urticating hairs capable of causing serious skin reactions.
Even simple contact can trigger discomfort, a burning sensation, or even complications. Young children and those with underlying health conditions are particularly susceptible.
How we avoided the worst

Instinctively, my husband gently moved our daughter away, then we alerted the municipal services or the National Forestry Office . Their response was swift: the insects were carefully removed and a warning sign was installed to inform walkers.
That day, we realized that even in the midst of a peaceful stroll, danger can be lurking close at hand.
